Meeting Highlights - February 20, 2025

Youth Advisory Council Presentation

The Commission received a presentation from the City of Grande Prairie’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC).  Members were pleased to hear how YAC works with City Council to provide the youth’s perspective on decisions made for the city. YAC meets monthly where they hear from delegates representing various community organizations.  They attend engagement opportunities and community events throughout the city and take part in learning tours.  When asked, youth substance abuse was identified as the number one issue impacting youth’s safety in the community.

Strategic Priorities

Governance Excellence, Advocacy, and Community Engagement are three of the Commission’s Strategic Priorities.  With a focus on building capacity in members and fully executing their responsibilities, the Commission approved a defined Onboarding Process along with their Training and Development Plan. Executing these plans will ensure members are fully prepared for their roles and responsibilities. The 2024 Commission Self Evaluations report indicated that all members have now completed the Provincial Online Training and have taken part in several learning opportunities through CAPG webinars.  In an effort to keep stakeholders informed, the Commission maintains three social media platforms and a website.  The 2024 External Communications Report approved at the meeting contains statistical information on reach and engagement on all platforms.  The Commission is satisfied with the level of growth on their current platforms and pleased that the meeting agendas and minutes page on the website has significant views.

Grande Prairie Police Service Transition Update

GPPS has initiated the RMS Data Conversion PROS to Niche working group to ensure the secure conversion of the appropriate RCMP PROS ‘pre-charge’ files to GPPS custody when required. With the assistance of other municipal police services in Alberta, GPPS has developed their Policy & Procedure Manual.  This Manual, along with proofs of compliance, will be required to obtain approval from the Public Safety and Emergency Services Ministry for change of command. The first recruit class (RTC #1) will be graduating tomorrow alongside three experienced officers.  Six members of RTC #1 will be deployed to the frontline within the RCMP Detachment to complete their field training, while the other six members will be temporarily assigned to other tasks until they are able to move over for their field training. Two of the experienced officer graduates will be deployed to the RCMP Detachment to serve as field training officers, and one will be assigned to the Recruiting Unit.  14 individuals have been selected to commence RTC #2 on March 31st. Applications are now open for RTC #3 and Experienced Officer Class #4.
